Impact of science
In January 2013 I started working on a UCL Office of Vice Provost for Research & PI Prof Brian Collins’ project about impact on public policy. Despite its name, it is very much an academic piece of work around ways to promote and improve STEM research at UCL in informing public policy. This calls for strategic vision and support from many levels to the academics carrying out the research in the first place. However, without knowledge of existing practice and the field at large, such strategy development is based on nothing more than a gut-feeling. Hence the current push to learn more about what we are doing right, and how we could do things even better in the future. The current focus resides within BEAMS, i.e. UCL faculties Bartlett (Built Environment), Engineering and Mathematical and Physical Sciences.
